Ethereum Foundation Drops Poseidon in Its Post-Quantum Rethink

The Ethereum Foundation is stepping back from the Poseidon hash function as it maps out a post-quantum future for the network. Researcher Justin Drake has argued that advances in compact proofs erased the performance advantage that made Poseidon attractive in the first place, removing the reason to accept its newer, less battle-tested cryptography. It is a technical decision, but one that speaks directly to how Ethereum plans to stay secure against the computers of the next decade.

What Happened

Poseidon is a hash function designed to be fast inside zero-knowledge proof systems, the cryptographic machinery Ethereum increasingly relies on to compress and verify computation. Its selling point was efficiency: it made proofs cheaper to generate than older, more conservative hashes. That efficiency is why it kept appearing in discussions of Ethereum’s long-term design.

Drake’s point is that the trade-off has shifted. Improvements in compact proof techniques have closed the performance gap, so the network no longer has to lean on a relatively young hash to hit its targets. When the speed advantage disappears, what remains is the security question — and older, heavily studied hash functions carry far more scrutiny than newer designs like Poseidon. The Foundation appears to be choosing the conservative, well-understood path for a system meant to guard value for decades.

What It Means for Traders

This is not a catalyst that moves a chart this week, and traders should not treat it as one. What it signals is the seriousness with which Ethereum’s core researchers are treating quantum resistance — the effort to make sure a future quantum computer could not break the cryptography securing wallets and consensus. That long-horizon credibility is part of what underpins the case for holding ETH as infrastructure rather than a short-term trade.

It also reinforces a pattern in how Ethereum evolves: slow, debate-heavy, and willing to reverse course when the evidence changes. Traders who follow protocol development have seen this play out repeatedly, from contentious upgrade fights to staking redesigns — including the friction around the EIP-8363 staking overhaul. The willingness to drop a favored component when the math no longer supports it is a feature, not a delay.

The Bigger Picture

Post-quantum security is quietly becoming one of the defining engineering challenges for every major blockchain. The cryptography that protects today’s networks was not designed with large-scale quantum computers in mind, and migrating a live, multi-hundred-billion-dollar system to quantum-resistant schemes is an enormous undertaking. Getting the foundational primitives right — the hash functions and proof systems everything else sits on — has to come first.

Zero-knowledge technology sits at the center of this, because it is both Ethereum’s scaling strategy and a moving target as the underlying math improves. The same proof advances reshaping the Poseidon decision are the ones driving the broader zk ecosystem, where competitive pressure has already reshuffled the landscape — as we saw when Loopring shut down its zk-rollup DEX. Ethereum’s task is to build for that shifting ground rather than lock in choices that today’s benchmarks flatter.

Conclusion

Dropping Poseidon is a small headline with a large message: Ethereum is prioritizing durable security over short-term efficiency as it plans for a post-quantum world. For anyone treating ETH as long-term infrastructure, the discipline behind decisions like this matters more than any single upgrade. It is a reminder that the network’s real roadmap is written in research threads long before it shows up on a price chart — a theme running through Ethereum’s eleven-year evolution.
