Kraken Parent Payward Partners With SoFi on Stablecoin and 24/7 Settlement

Payward, the company behind crypto exchange Kraken, is partnering with fintech SoFi in a deal that brings SoFi’s dollar stablecoin to the exchange and plugs Payward into a round-the-clock settlement network. For traders, the headline is not a new token — it is the plumbing. Faster, always-on dollar settlement between a major exchange and a licensed U.S. fintech is the kind of infrastructure upgrade that quietly changes how quickly capital can move in and out of crypto markets.

What Happened

Under the arrangement, SoFiUSD — SoFi’s stablecoin — will be available on Kraken, while Payward connects to SoFi’s 24/7 dollar settlement network. In return, SoFi gains access to digital-asset liquidity through Kraken Prime, the exchange’s institutional trading arm. In effect, a regulated fintech and a large crypto exchange are wiring their dollar rails together so value can settle at any hour, not just during traditional banking windows.

That combination — a bank-adjacent fintech, a crypto exchange, and a stablecoin as the connective tissue — is becoming a template. It lets each side offer what it lacks: SoFi gets crypto liquidity, and Kraken gets a deeper, faster dollar on-ramp backed by a licensed U.S. counterparty.

What It Means for Traders

The practical benefit is settlement speed. Crypto trades around the clock, but the dollar rails behind it have traditionally paused on nights, weekends, and holidays. A 24/7 settlement network narrows that gap, which can reduce the delays and counterparty risk that build up when funds are stuck in transit over a weekend. For active traders and institutions moving size, faster settlement means capital sits idle less often.

A stablecoin embedded in a major exchange also concentrates liquidity, which can tighten spreads and make it easier to rotate between dollars and crypto without touching slow traditional transfers. This is the same competitive logic driving other exchange partnerships — Kraken has been aggressively expanding its institutional reach, from a $600 million tokenization bet backed by Citadel to tokenized-equity products. Each move deepens the exchange’s role as a bridge between traditional finance and crypto.

The Bigger Picture

Stablecoins are increasingly the settlement layer of choice for firms that want dollar exposure without waiting on legacy banking hours. That shift is unfolding as U.S. rules for the sector take shape, with regulators moving toward clearer standards for how stablecoins are issued and audited. Recent policy work — from the GENIUS Act’s first year reshaping how stablecoins are sold to Treasury rules that could force exchanges to audit the stablecoins they list — is setting the terms these deals must operate under.

The strategic message is that the line between fintech and crypto exchange keeps blurring. When a company like SoFi routes dollars into a crypto venue and a crypto venue supplies liquidity back, both are building toward the same destination: a financial system where dollars and digital assets settle on shared, always-on rails. Stablecoins are the instrument making that convergence practical.

Conclusion

The Payward–SoFi tie-up is an infrastructure story with real trading consequences: faster dollar settlement, deeper liquidity, and tighter integration between regulated fintech and crypto markets. As stablecoin rules firm up, expect more of these cross-industry partnerships — and traders who understand the plumbing will be better placed to read where liquidity is heading.
