Ethena Puts Revenue-Funded ENA Buybacks to a Governance Vote

Ethena is asking its community to tie the ENA token directly to the protocol’s cash flow. A new governance proposal would flip a “fee switch” that routes 95% of net protocol revenue into buying back ENA, alongside a plan to repurchase the token supply held by major early investors. ENA rose about 10% as the proposal surfaced. For DeFi traders, this is a live experiment in one of the sector’s most contested questions: can real protocol revenue, not emissions and incentives, become the thing that backs a token’s value?

What Happened

The Ethena Foundation put forward two linked ideas. The first is a fee switch that would direct 95% of the protocol’s net revenue into open-market buybacks of ENA. In effect, the more the protocol earns, the more ENA it would purchase, creating a mechanical link between usage and token demand.

The second is a proposal to buy back the token supply held by major early investors. Concentrated early-investor allocations are a persistent overhang in crypto: large holders who bought in cheaply can sell into strength, capping upside and unsettling other holders. Repurchasing that supply is an attempt to clear the overhang and align incentives. The market’s initial response was a roughly 10% move higher in ENA as traders digested the proposal.

What It Means for Traders

The core appeal of a revenue-funded buyback is that it points to a real, recurring source of demand rather than a one-off announcement. Instead of relying on token emissions that dilute holders, the model channels money the protocol actually earns back toward the token. That is a fundamentally different value proposition from incentive-driven farming, a distinction we broke down in our guide to sustainable DeFi yield versus token incentives.

But the mechanism is only as strong as the revenue behind it. A fee switch that sends 95% of net revenue to buybacks is powerful when revenue is high and unremarkable when revenue falls. Protocol income for a synthetic-dollar and yield platform can be cyclical, moving with market conditions, funding rates and demand for its products. Traders evaluating the proposal should weigh the durability of that revenue, not just the headline percentage, because buyback strength tracks the business, not the promise.

There is also governance and execution risk. The proposal still has to pass a vote, and buyback programs can be paused, resized or redirected by future governance decisions. A 10% pop on the announcement reflects optimism, but the value accrual only becomes real if the fee switch is implemented and the revenue shows up. The gap between proposal and execution is where a lot of DeFi narratives quietly stall.

The Bigger Picture

Ethena’s move is part of a broader maturation in DeFi, where the leading protocols are trying to look more like cash-flowing businesses than incentive schemes. The template is not new to crypto’s dollar economy — the profitability of large stablecoin issuers has shown how much money can flow to whoever controls the underlying assets, as seen in the outsized treasury-driven profits reported across the stablecoin sector. Revenue-linked token models are an attempt to share that kind of value with holders directly.

The open question is regulatory. When a token’s value is explicitly tied to a share of protocol revenue, it starts to resemble the kind of instrument regulators scrutinize, and DeFi’s structure makes it hard to pin down who is even responsible. That tension is already playing out in Europe, where rule-makers are struggling to identify a regulated party in decentralized systems. Revenue-to-token designs will likely draw more of that attention as they spread.

The Bottom Line

Ethena’s proposal is one of the clearer bets that DeFi tokens should be backed by revenue rather than emissions. If the fee switch passes and the income holds up, it becomes a case study other protocols will copy; if revenue proves fragile, it becomes a lesson in why the mechanism matters less than the money behind it. Either way, traders now have a concrete framework to judge the token by, which is progress in a sector long ruled by narrative.
