DEXs Hit Record 19.5% of Spot Volume as CEX Trading Slides

Decentralized exchanges just captured a record 19.5% of combined spot trading volume as centralized venues shed activity. CEX spot volume fell 31.2% in July to $727 billion, the lowest monthly total since October 2023, while DEX spot trading volume slipped only 9.82% to $176 billion. The widening gap shows traders where liquidity and habits are quietly migrating.

What Happened

Both venue types lost volume in July, but they lost it at very different rates. Centralized exchanges dropped nearly a third of their spot activity, while decentralized exchanges gave back less than 10%. Because DEX volume proved stickier during a broad slowdown, its share of the combined total climbed to a record 19.5%, meaning close to one in five spot trades now clears on-chain.

The relative resilience is the story. In a down month for the whole market, decentralized venues held their users better than centralized ones did.

What It Means for Traders

A rising DEX share changes where liquidity lives. As more volume routes on-chain, order books on centralized venues can thin out for certain pairs, which affects slippage and execution for larger orders. Traders increasingly need to check liquidity across both venue types rather than assuming the deepest book is always centralized.

The shift also improves data transparency. On-chain flow is visible in real time, giving traders a clearer read on where activity is concentrating. Tooling upgrades are part of the pull, as seen when Uniswap launched a token discovery tab to make on-chain markets easier to navigate.

It is worth keeping the trend in context. Centralized exchanges still handle the large majority of spot volume, and this is one month of data, not a completed handover. But the direction has been building, echoing the earlier quarter when CEX spot volume fell 39%.

The Bigger Picture

The migration toward on-chain trading reflects deeper currents: a preference for self-custody, better DEX infrastructure, and a regulatory environment that keeps reshaping how centralized platforms operate. Even regulators are now engaging directly with on-chain mechanics, as our coverage of the Treasury targeting DeFi sandwich attacks showed.

Each of those forces nudges volume the same way. None of them is decisive alone, but together they explain why the DEX share keeps setting new records even during weak months.

Conclusion

A record 19.5% DEX share is a milestone in a slow, structural shift rather than a sudden break. For traders, the takeaway is practical: liquidity is fragmenting across venue types, and execution now depends on watching both. Whether DEXs can hold this share when centralized volume recovers is the next thing to watch.
